The West Coast Eagles have officially named Andrew McQualter as their new men’s senior coach, succeeding Adam Simpson, the club’s former premiership-winning coach. This decision, reported initially by the ABC‘s Brett Sprigg, sees McQualter edge out contenders such as Hayden Skipworth, Stephen King, and interim coach Jarrad Schofield for the coveted role.

McQualter, who recently served as an assistant coach at Melbourne, was previously Richmond‘s interim coach following Damien Hardwick‘s resignation. His appointment comes as the Eagles aim to reinvigorate their team before the commencement of the AFL trade period and potentially attract significant player acquisitions.

“We believe Andrew has the professional and personal qualities and experience required to guide our team. We are excited to have someone of his calibre leading our football program forward,” said West Coast Eagles’ chief executive, Don Pyke, in an official statement.

McQualter, who will permanently relocate to Western Australia with his family, expressed his enthusiasm for the new role. “I have been working towards this moment for the last 10 years and I’m thrilled to be appointed as coach of the West Coast Eagles,” he said. “There is some exciting young talent at the club with a mix of outstanding players, and I couldn’t be more excited to get over there and get to work with them.”

The 38-year-old McQualter takes on his new role at a challenging time for the Eagles, who have struggled in recent seasons, finishing near the bottom of the AFL ladder. However, with his prior experience and connections in the league, including ties with Richmond players like Liam Baker, Shai Bolton, and Jack Graham, who have shown interest in moving to Western Australia, McQualter may help the club in restoring competitive form.

His appointment marks a new era for the Eagles as they look to rejuvenate their football program under McQualter’s leadership. The club is scheduled to hold a press conference to officially present him to the media and supporters.
