Andrey Rublev, the world number seven in men’s tennis, has revealed more about his recent health scare that nearly resulted in the loss of one of his testicles. During a press conference held at the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm, where he is the top seed, Rublev shared the harrowing experience that required emergency surgery.

Describing how the incident unfolded, Rublev mentioned he was rushed to the hospital after experiencing persistent pain in the area. “I almost lost my ball,” the Russian tennis player explained candidly, referring to the potential amputation he faced. He added, “Now I feel perfect, everything went well.”

Rublev recounted that he was fortunate to have sought medical attention within the critical timeframe to prevent an amputation. “They say you have only five or six hours if the blood stops going there, and then it’s amputation,” he stated. Rublev was quickly taken into surgery only a few hours after detecting the initial discomfort.

The tennis star’s ordeal began shortly after his exit from the US Open, where he reached the fourth round before falling to Grigor Dimitrov. Prior to his appearance in Stockholm, Rublev had also withdrawn from the Hangzhou Open, citing health concerns.

Following the surgery, which successfully addressed his condition, Rublev intended to spend a month recuperating. To the surprise of his medical team and himself, he made a swift return to competitive tennis, participating in the China Open and managing to reach the quarterfinals in Beijing.

Rublev’s openness about the situation continued during his press appearances, where he added humor to his explanation, saying, “The last thing before they made me sleep, I signed the paper saying they were allowed to amputate my ball.”

As he continues his comeback at the Nordic Open, Rublev successfully advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Alexandre Muller convincingly. Reflecting on his recovery and return to play, Rublev emphasized how lucky he felt to be back on the court so soon.

Rublev’s recent health scare is not the only instance of adversity he has faced this year. Earlier, at the French Open, Rublev had an infamous outburst that highlighted the emotional and physical challenges professional athletes often endure. Despite these setbacks, Rublev’s resilience and ability to perform at high levels remain evident as he continues to compete amongst the top players in the world.
