Amanda Anisimova Tennis Match Beijing

BEIJING, China — Amanda Anisimova staged an impressive comeback on Thursday, rallying from a set down to defeat Jasmine Paolini 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 in a thrilling quarterfinal match at the China Open. The victory not only propels Anisimova into the semifinals, where she will face fellow American Coco Gauff, but also marks her first qualification for the WTA Finals in Riyadh.

This match, lasting nearly three hours, exemplified Anisimova’s resilience and determination. After losing the first set in a tiebreak, she persevered to take control in the following sets. “It was a goal I set for myself at the beginning of the year,” Anisimova said post-match. “I think it was actually one of the only goals I made, so I’m super excited.”

Anisimova’s path to victory against the No. 6 seed was not easy. After serving for the first set at 5-4, she suffered a crucial double fault, allowing Paolini to break back. The first set concluded with Paolini winning 7-4 in the tiebreak.

Determined to turn the match around, Anisimova opened the second set strong, racing to a 4-2 lead despite dropping a couple of games. In a time of trouble, she showcased her ability to handle pressure, ultimately winning the second set 6-3.

The final set saw dramatic momentum shifts, particularly in the eighth game. After falling behind 15-40, Anisimova showcased her tenacity, saving multiple break points. She levelled the set 4-4 with a pinpoint winner, which seemed to rejuvenate her energy.

With renewed vigor, Anisimova broke Paolini in the next game and sealed her victory with a confident service game, closing the match at 6-4.

Looking forward, Anisimova expressed enthusiasm for her upcoming match against Gauff, highlighting their competitive history. The two have split their previous encounters, adding another layer of excitement for this all-American semifinal.

“I’m excited to play Coco,” Anisimova said. “Every time we play it’s a really tough match, so it’s going to be fun to play another American here.”
