Dr. Anthony Fauci Hospitalized with West Nile Virus
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former chief U.S. infectious disease expert, was recently hospitalized after contracting the West Nile virus. A spokesperson confirmed that he is now recovering at home.
The spokesperson stated that Dr. Fauci is expected to make a complete recovery. This information was shared under conditions of anonymity due to security concerns.
West Nile virus is primarily transmitted through infected mosquito bites. While most infected individuals may not show symptoms, approximately 20% can experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches. In rare cases, about 1 in 150 can develop severe, and sometimes fatal, illnesses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Dr. Fauci believes he was infected by a mosquito bite he received in his backyard. He was hospitalized ten days prior after experiencing fever, chills, and severe fatigue. Reports indicate he spent about a week in the hospital.
As a prominent figure during the COVID-19 pandemic, Fauci became a trusted voice for many, while also facing criticism from some political factions. He recently testified before Congress regarding the origins of COVID-19 and the government’s response to the pandemic.
Last summer, Dr. Fauci joined Georgetown University as a distinguished university professor. The CDC reports that there are currently no vaccines or specific treatments for West Nile virus, emphasizing the importance of preventing mosquito bites to reduce the risk of infection.
