De’Anthony Melton’s Emerging Role with the Golden State Warriors
De'Anthony Melton, a recent acquisition by the Golden State Warriors, is anticipated to make a significant impact on the team this season. Known by the nickname “Mr. Do Something,” Melton explained during an exclusive interview with Kerith Burke of NBC Sports Bay Area at the Warriors’ Media Day how this moniker originated. “It was given to me by Brevin Knight, who is a color commentator for Bally Sports Southeast Grizzlies,” Melton shared. “When I first started playing, he said, ‘He’s always doing something, call him Mr. Do Something.’ Initially, I didn’t appreciate it. I thought it implied I wasn’t contributing enough. However, over time, it grew on me, especially as the fans started to embrace it.”
Melton has joined the Warriors this offseason and is expected to play a crucial role in Steve Kerr’s coaching plans. At 26 years of age, Melton has built a reputation similar to his new teammate, Gary Payton II, as a versatile, hard-nosed player who can affect both defensive and offensive play.
Despite Melton being lined up for a substantial role, the Warriors’ starting shooting guard position remains competitive. According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Melton did not start in a recent preseason game against the Sacramento Kings, with Brandin Podziemski being given the opportunity instead. Both Melton and Podziemski are vying for the starting spot, though each is likely to maintain a significant role irrespective of the starting lineup decisions.
The expectation is high for Melton’s performance as San Francisco’s basketball community, often referred to as “Dub Nation,” looks forward to embracing “Mr. Do Something.” As the season progresses, his adaptability and influence on the court are set to be a focal point for the Warriors as they aim to solidify their competitive edge.
