In what turned out to be a dramatic and unpredictable season finale, Apple TV+’s crime series “Bad Monkey,” based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel, concluded with the unexpected demise of three key characters. Gracie, known as the Dragon Queen and portrayed by Jodie Turner-Smith, was killed off by Eve, played by Meredith Hagner. Eve also pushed her husband, Nick, played by Rob Delaney, into the ocean, leading to his death. The show’s narrative, weaving between magic and reality, took a darker turn as Eve choked on a baby carrot, further meeting her end in a mysterious fall from a building while in Portugal.

The series’ protagonist, Yancy, portrayed by Vince Vaughn, returned to his position as a health inspector within the Florida Keys. The finale saw Yancy reconnect with various characters, including a brief reconnection with Rosa, suggesting a closing chapter in their relationship. The season ended similarly to how it began, with a scene involving Rogelio, played by John Ortiz, inviting Yancy to inspect something in his car, hinting at more mysteries to come.

In an interview with Deadline, series creator Bill Lawrence shared insights into the show’s future and the character dynamics present in the finale. Lawrence, known for creating acclaimed series like “Scrubs” and “Ted Lasso,” discussed potential plans for a second season, based on Hiaasen’s sequel “Razor Girl.” Although Apple TV+ has yet to confirm a continuation for “Bad Monkey,” Lawrence expressed optimism, pointing to the show’s success in stream rankings.

Lawrence elaborated on character journeys in “Bad Monkey,” explaining possible returning characters for a second season. “Razor Girl” might feature the return of Natalie Martinez‘s character, Rosa, whose storyline resonated with viewers. Other characters potentially returning include minor roles established in “Bad Monkey,” reflecting Hiaasen’s narrative style, where individuals from one story continue into another.

The title “Bad Monkey,” despite the limited involvement of the monkey Diggs in the series, remains significant due to Hiaasen’s established work. Lawrence acknowledged the challenge of aligning the title with the content when the narrative does not revolve around the titular monkey, leaving open the possibility for creative solutions in future seasons.

Modifications from book to screen, such as Eve’s unconventional death and the ultimate fate of Gracie, were deliberate choices intended to align with the show’s developing storyline. Lawrence emphasized the importance of gradually introducing an element of magical realism, a theme he’d discussed and developed with Hiaasen, tailoring the story to fit the series format.

Vince Vaughn’s portrayal of Yancy, a character initially inspired by a big, affable figure reminiscent of James Garner, stood out as a highlight of the series. Vaughn’s performance, along with his involvement in the character’s development, has been noted as bringing a unique blend of humor and humanity to the role, contributing to the show’s overall success.
