Arch Manning’s Reserve Role Highlights Texas Longhorns Quarterback Dynamic
The promising career trajectory of young quarterback Arch Manning continues to capture the interest of college football enthusiasts. Manning, representing the University of Texas, has demonstrated impressive statistics this season with nine passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns in his limited playtime. However, despite his potential and recent performances, Manning will not start in Texas’ highly anticipated matchup against Georgia.
Manning, the grandson of former NFL star Archie Manning, has been captivating audiences by showcasing his arm talent and precision in his four game appearances this season. Nonetheless, Texas’ depth chart ranks him as QB2, following junior quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers, who has been the starter for Texas since transferring from Ohio State in 2021, will lead the team against Georgia.
Ewers regained his starting position after being sidelined with an abdominal injury over previous games. During his absence, Manning took on the starting role and led the Longhorns to victories with commendable performances, recording 583 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian reinstated Ewers to the starting lineup upon his return from injury, preferring the junior’s experience despite Manning flashing significant talent. Commenting on the situation, Sarkisian was reticent to consider replacing Ewers and expressed his respect for Ewers’ rhythm and leadership abilities built over the past seasons.
During a conference call earlier this week, Sarkisian stated, “I’m not even going to answer that [question about replacing Ewers]. I don’t know what the question is. Next question.” Sarkisian further added, “I’ve got respect for a guy that’s a starting quarterback and the rhythm that is needed to play with.”
Reflecting on his college career, Quinn Ewers has accrued 6,546 passing yards, 46 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. His performance has been pivotal in Texas achieving successful seasons, including a 12-2 finish in 2023.
In contrast, Manning’s pedigree and brief stints on the field make him a highly-watched prospect. His earlier engagement this season, alongside Ewers’ brief absence, underscored the depth and talent present in Texas’ quarterback squad. Freshman Trey Owens, another strong recruit, follows closely on the depth chart as QB3, having seen limited action this season.
Saturday’s game against Georgia presents a formidable challenge for the Longhorns. Bulldogs’ head coach has acknowledged the capability of Texas’ quarterbacks, stating that both Ewers and Manning’s similar play styles “doesn’t change how we prepare.” With Ewers’ track record and Manning’s growing potential, Texas enters the matchup with versatile options at the quarterback position.
