ASU’s Sam Leavitt Out for Season with Injury, Surgery Scheduled
TEMPE, AZ (AP) — Arizona State University announced Friday that starting quarterback Sam Leavitt will undergo season-ending surgery due to a lingering foot injury. Head coach Kenny Dillingham disclosed the news during an interview on Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta show.
Leavitt’s injury, which he first sustained in a game against Baylor on September 20, had limited his play throughout the season. “He has been battling and fighting. He’s the ultimate competitor,” Dillingham said. Despite his efforts, the injury did not improve sufficiently for Leavitt to continue playing.
Injured against Baylor, Leavitt had played through pain but could not finish the game against Texas Tech or manage to play effectively against Houston last week. This season, he has thrown for 1,628 yards and 10 touchdowns while also adding five rushing touchdowns.
Leavitt’s absence leaves the Sun Devils in the hands of sixth-year senior Jeff Sims, who has experience stepping in as a starter when needed. Sims has served as Leavitt’s backup and will now take the lead in ASU’s upcoming games. Backup Cam Dyer is also available.
The Sun Devils are currently 5-3 and are set to face Iowa State in a rematch of last year’s Big 12 title game on Saturday. The game is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. MST, and ASU will look to build upon the momentum from their earlier wins this season.
Meanwhile, the team is also dealing with injuries to other key players, particularly wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, who is doubtful to play against Iowa State. Tyson has been sidelined due to a hamstring issue.
Leavitt’s departure raises questions about his future as he is eligible for the NFL Draft. “It’s unfortunate that it just hasn’t gotten any better,” Dillingham added, noting the challenges faced by Leavitt this season.
