ASU Sun Devils Land Top Cornerback Commitment Amid Major Departures

Tempe, Ariz. – Arizona State University’s football team has turned heads with an unexpected run to the Big 12 championship game following a disappointing 2023 season. Head coach Kenny Dillingham, who faced the challenge of rebuilding a team amidst a wave of player departures, has committed to improving his roster, marking a potential turning point for the Sun Devils.
Despite a rocky 3-9 record in the Pac-12 last year, predictions for the Sun Devils were grim as they entered the Big 12, with many expecting them to finish last in the conference. However, the team’s ability to defy expectations has been overshadowed by a significant loss of talent, which saw 12 players depart in December alone.
“What we’re looking to do is make our team better,” Dillingham stated, emphasizing his focus on recruitment as the offseason progresses. The latest piece in his vision came when 4-star cornerback Jalen Williams committed to the Sun Devils, beating out 33 competing programs for his signature.
On April 5, recruiting analyst Chad Simmons announced via social media, “NEWS: Marietta (Ga.) Kelly CB Jalen Williams has committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils. #ForksUp.” Williams chose ASU over offers from notable programs including North Carolina State, Oklahoma, and Pittsburgh, highlighting the allure of the Sun Devils’ progressive vision.
“One of the biggest reasons why I chose them was how I related best to coach Dillingham and the entire staff. They showed the most genuine love, and they really prioritized me,” Williams explained. “I like how they have a plan for me too.”
Williams is not just an ordinary recruit; Rivals ranks him as the eighth-best nickel back in his class and the 44th overall prospect from Georgia. His high school stats speak volumes about his ability—39 total tackles, two interceptions, and six pass breakups in 12 games during his junior year at Kell High School.
Cornerbacks coach Bryan Carrington also played a significant role in Williams’ decision, as the young coach’s approach resonates well with him. “Coach Dilly, coach Carrington, and the majority of the staff are pretty young. They’re relatable. They have a lot of fun, but they work real hard. I feel like I can be myself with them,” Williams added.
As the Sun Devils navigate the offseason, another player, quarterback Sam Leavitt, is emerging as a key figure for the team. Leavitt’s impressive stats last season included 2,885 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, along with 443 rushing yards. His commitment to continuous improvement is evident as he keeps motivational phrases visible to inspire himself.
Leavitt’s potential for the upcoming season has drawn attention from sports analysts. Jesse Morrison, a host on the Arizona Sports podcast, speculated, “I think he’s playing one more year at ASU, gonna be a first-round pick. That’s my opinion.” Meanwhile, co-host Jeremy Schnell noted that wide receiver Jordan Tyson would be crucial to Leavitt’s success in the coming year.
As anticipation builds for the 2025 season, ASU hopes that with key new recruits like Jalen Williams and strong leadership from players like Sam Leavitt, they can exceed expectations once again in the Big 12.
