Atlanta United’s Guzan Announces Retirement After 21-Year Career

ATLANTA — Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan announced on Tuesday that he will retire after a 21-year career in professional soccer. Guzan, who is 41 years old, has been with Atlanta United since its inaugural season in 2017.
The team will pay tribute to Guzan during his final home game on Saturday against D.C. United. In his announcement shared on social media, Guzan expressed gratitude to the fans, saying, “Thank you Atlanta! ❤️🖤 Forever a 5-Stripe.”
Guzan joined Atlanta after a successful career in England, where he played for Aston Villa, Hull City, and Middlesbrough. He made nearly 150 league appearances for Aston Villa from 2008 to 2016. Guzan was also a key player for the U.S. men’s national team, earning 64 caps and competing in multiple World Cups.
During his time with Atlanta United, Guzan helped secure the franchise’s first major trophy in 2018 by shutting out the Portland Timbers in the MLS Cup final, winning 2-0. Over nine seasons, he played in 224 league games, becoming a fan favorite known for his leadership on and off the field.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber congratulated Guzan on social media, calling him a “class act throughout his remarkable journey in professional soccer.”
As Guzan prepares to leave the game, he looks back on his career fondly, stating, “To the beautiful game — thank you for letting me live this dream.”
