Auburn Football Seeks New Coach After Firing Hugh Freeze

Auburn Football Coach Search

AUBURN, AlabamaAuburn University is looking for a new head football coach after firing Hugh Freeze on November 5, 2025. Freeze leaves the program with a disappointing 16-19 record, facing the possibility of a fifth consecutive losing season, a feat not seen since the 1940s.

Auburn’s struggles can be traced back to leadership changes that veered away from the institution’s core values. When they hired Freeze three years ago, former president Steven Leath‘s controversial strategies disrupted the program’s traditional values, according to many observers.

The Auburn Creed, emphasizing hard work and community trust, serves as the program’s guiding principles. Yet, some believe the administration has turned to outside influences rather than developing internal leadership, which has led to distrust among fans and the Auburn community.

John Cohen, Auburn’s athletics director, understands the urgency of making the right decision. Cohen said Monday, ‘I grew up in the state of Alabama. I know how special this fanbase is… We’ve got to get this done.’ He stresses that he alone will lead the coaching search.

Potential candidates include Tulane’s Jon Sumrall, a seasoned coach known for building relationships and fostering community ties. He has a record of winning two conference titles in just two years at Tulane, and his connection to Auburn through family ties makes him a compelling choice.

Other names being tossed around include James Franklin and Eli Drinkwitz, but their interest remains uncertain. The focus will likely be on coaches who not only have successful credentials but also align with Auburn’s philosophical values.

As the coaching carousel continues, Auburn faces an opportunity to redefine its identity and connection to its foundational values. The right hire could restore pride in a program once known for its competitive spirit and success.
