BASSEL, Switzerland — Felix Auger-Aliassime emerged victorious over fellow Montrealer Gabriel Diallo in a tightly contested first-round match at the Swiss Indoors on Wednesday. The fifth-seeded Auger-Aliassime won 6-2, 7-5 in their first-ever ATP Tour meeting, showcasing the burgeoning rivalry between the two Canadian players.

Both players embraced at the net following the match, reflecting their friendship and shared journey through tennis. Auger-Aliassime, 25, has had a longer career on the professional circuit compared to the 24-year-old Diallo, who has made significant strides in recent years after playing NCAA tennis at Kentucky.

Ranked 12th in the world, Auger-Aliassime recently reached the semifinals at the US Open, while Diallo stands at No. 41. Auger-Aliassime converted four of his 12 break points during the match and displayed a strong service game, winning 78% of his first serves compared to Diallo’s 67%.

Auger-Aliassime, fresh off a championship win at the European Open in Belgium, will face Marin Cilic of Croatia in the next round. Diallo’s progress in the tournament reflects his rise as he has begun to establish himself more prominently on the ATP Tour.

“Diallo is a hell of a player,” Auger-Aliassime remarked. “It was tough to play such a good friend, a bit awkward. I don’t think I have ever been so nervous at the start of a match.”
