Avalanche Face Tough Decision as Rantanen’s Contract Looms
DENVER, Colo. — The Colorado Avalanche are facing a critical decision as star forward Mikko Rantanen approaches the end of his contract. Rantanen, 28, is on pace for his third consecutive 100-point season and is a key contributor to the team’s success. However, with no extension in sight and the trade deadline looming, the Avalanche must weigh their options carefully.
Rantanen, who ranks third in ice time among NHL forwards, is one of the league’s most underrated superstars. Despite his consistent performance, his name is often overlooked in discussions about the NHL’s elite players. “He’s on pace for over 100 points and 40 goals for the third straight season,” said Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet. “But the Avalanche and Rantanen are far apart on an extension.”
The financial implications of re-signing Rantanen are significant. With Nathan MacKinnon already earning $12.6 million annually and the salary cap expected to rise, Rantanen could command a contract closer to Leon Draisaitl‘s $14 million per year. “It’s unlikely Rantanen would sign long-term for less than MacKinnon’s number,” Kypreos added.
Colorado’s reliance on Rantanen is undeniable. He not only leads the team offensively but also fills in at center when needed, providing crucial lineup flexibility. Losing him would place additional pressure on MacKinnon and defenseman Cale Makar, potentially derailing the Avalanche’s playoff aspirations.
If the Avalanche cannot secure Rantanen’s signature, trading him before the deadline might be their only option to avoid losing him for nothing in free agency. “Rantanen would certainly bring back a haul,” Kypreos noted. “But it’s hard to envision any deal where Colorado comes out ahead.”
The situation is further complicated by the team’s tight salary cap and the impending return of Gabriel Landeskog, who carries a $7 million cap hit. “The Avalanche are already very tight to the cap,” Kypreos said. “Rantanen’s potential $4 million raise would strain the roster even more.”
As the trade deadline approaches, the Avalanche find themselves in a precarious position. They may not be able to afford to keep Rantanen, but they also cannot afford to lose him.
