Avalanche Unveils Throwback Jerseys Honoring Quebec Nordiques Legacy
DENVER, Colo. — The Colorado Avalanche are reviving their historical roots with exciting new uniforms this season. On Tuesday, the team announced that they will debut throwback jerseys this Thursday featuring the Quebec Nordiques logo, connecting fans to the franchise’s Canadian heritage.
The Avalanche will wear these vintage jerseys for the first time against the Carolina Hurricanes, who will also showcase their own throwback Hartford Whalers sweaters. This clash is especially nostalgic, as both teams were part of the Adams Division from 1981 to 1995 and faced each other in previous playoffs.
The Nordiques logo, which includes an igloo and fleur-de-lis, reflects the team’s French-Canadian background. The color scheme is inspired by the French flag, featuring blue, red, and white hues. This jersey showcases the history of the franchise, which began as a WHA team before joining the NHL in 1979.
Joe Sakic, a Hockey Hall of Famer and a pivotal figure in the franchise’s history, revealed the new jerseys in a social media video. Sakic played his entire career with the team, having been drafted by the Nordiques in 1987 and transitioning with the team to Denver in 1995.
The Avalanche plan to wear the Nordiques-themed jerseys seven times throughout the 2025-26 season, celebrating their 30 seasons in Colorado. Following the opener on Thursday, the jerseys will make appearances on several upcoming game dates, including matchups against the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Fans can expect an exciting atmosphere as the Avalanche pays tribute to its past while honoring the team’s rich history in Colorado. The merchandise featuring the new jerseys will be available for purchase starting Tuesday and offers a meaningful connection for both old and new fans alike.
