Barcelona Approves Budgets Amid Controversy and Future Prospects
Barcelona, Spain – Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona, defended his administration during the club’s assembly held on Sunday. Members approved the budget for the 2025-26 season, which includes an increase in sports salaries amounting to 565 million euros (659 million dollars).
Treasurer Ferran Olivé announced expected revenues of 55 million euros (64.13 million dollars) from player sales or loans, along with 226 million euros (263.5 million dollars) from the return to Spotify Camp Nou. “The budgets have been prepared prudently and reflect reality,” Laporta stated. “I am confident they will be better than what we presented.”
Laporta addressed questions regarding financial leverages, insisting on the necessity for the club to maintain its ownership model. He revealed that UEFA had intended to impose severe penalties on Barcelona but recognized the club’s unique status as a non-public entity, which helped to mitigate penalties from 60 million to 15 million euros. “We even faced a potential ban from the Champions League,” he noted.
Regarding the controversial decision to move a match to Miami, Laporta justified this move as essential for expanding the club’s international brand. He acknowledged, “We do not wish to take our team far, but we must generate atypical income.”
Sports director Deco indicated that while no winter transfers are anticipated, the club remains prepared for potential needs, stating, “We will be ready if anything goes out of control or if we need a player.”
During the lengthy assembly, lasting over 11 hours, Laporta displayed a lighter side, joking about Hansi Flick’s expressions after a close match victory. “I told Flick that he has style,” he said, downplaying Flick’s frustrations.
The assembly, conducted online, prevented significant dissent from members. Past assemblies have seen backlash, such as with former president Josep Maria Bartomeu. Despite some contentious queries regarding ticket prices and financial strategies, Laporta maintained a calm demeanor while addressing questions concerning club operations and budgetary decisions.
As the assembly concluded, Laporta expressed optimism about the club’s future. “We feel stronger, more convinced, and determined than ever to complete the recovery of Barça in all aspects,” he said.
