Barcelona Coach Hansi Flick Expresses Concern Over Player Injuries
In a recent prematch press conference, FC Barcelona‘s head coach, Hansi Flick, shared his feelings of responsibility regarding midfielder Fermin Lopez‘s recent injury. The young player sustained this injury as he was returning from a prior issue with his quadriceps, which had occurred during his time with Spain’s U21s.
Fermin had made a remarkable recovery ahead of schedule, but during his first training session back, he suffered another setback. Initially, the club had estimated a recovery period of three to four weeks. Flick expressed his regret over not intervening earlier to perhaps prevent Fermin from joining Spain’s U-21 team earlier this month.
“In recent days, we have been cautious with players returning from injury,” said Flick. “It’s important that they reintegrate gradually with manageable workloads.” He noted that other players such as Gavi are also back to training but require careful handling to ensure full recovery.
Flick lamented the situation with Fermin, especially given the player’s active participation in two tournaments during the summer. He also expressed a sense of guilt, believing there was potential for better communication with the U-21 coaching staff.
Additionally, FC Barcelona will be without Dani Olmo for their Champions League debut against AS Monaco since he too suffered an injury, this time during a match against Girona. “Replacing a player like Dani is challenging,” Flick admitted, describing Olmo as pivotal due to his capability to score and assist in front of goal.
Despite the setbacks, Barcelona has maintained an impressive record for the 2024/2025 season, which Flick and Barcelona supporters, known as Culers, hope to extend in the coming matches. The coach highlighted the team’s excellent performance thus far, emphasizing their quality and the contribution of younger players to the team’s success.
Flick concluded by praising the players for embodying the club’s philosophy on the pitch, which has been evident in their five consecutive victories. He stressed the importance of the players’ commitment and the young talents who have enhanced the team’s level after international experiences.
