CHICAGO, Ill. — Belal Muhammad is set to defend his UFC welterweight title against Shavkat Rakhmonov, the undefeated contender known for his finishing ability, in early 2025. Muhammad, who took the championship from Leon Edwards on July 27, 2024, at UFC 304, expressed confidence in his fight style ahead of the matchup.

Despite facing a setback that forced him to withdraw from their originally scheduled bout at UFC 310, Muhammad’s resolve remains firm. He stated, “I will be in his face the whole time, and it will have the same result – another guy breaks.” Muhammad secured the title with a dominant performance in Manchester, England, managing to maintain relentless pressure and showcasing superior grappling skills.

Rakhmonov, who has finished seven out of his eight UFC opponents, presents a significant challenge. The Kazakhstani fighter possesses a well-rounded skill set that combines striking with elite grappling techniques. This high-stakes title fight promises excitement as both fighters prepare intensively in anticipation of their encounter.

Muhammad’s path to the title was fraught with challenges, including being overlooked for opportunities despite an impressive 10-fight unbeaten streak, which boasts victories against notable fighters like Gilbert Burns and Stephen Thompson. His last-minute cancellation from fighting Rakhmonov led to the challenger receiving a different opponent, Ian Machado Garry, but Rakhmonov showcased his skills with a unanimous decision victory over Garry.

In an interview with Barstool Sports Chicago, Muhammad analyzed Rakhmonov’s previous opponents, suggesting they may have succumbed to mental barriers before entering the octagon. “When you fight a guy like Shavkat, who they put on this pedestal as this undefeated monster, I see holes in his game just like I did with Leon’s game,” Muhammad elaborated.

As both fighters ramp up their training camps, Muhammad is focusing on wrestling-heavy preparation while Rakhmonov reportedly works on enhancing his striking defense. Muhammad, reflecting on his strategy and previous victory against Edwards, noted, “When you’ve never felt that kind of pressure, that’s the worst scenario for you. I’m going to be that guy.”

UFC President Dana White has hinted that an official announcement regarding the fight’s date may come soon. “Belal has been waiting to defend his belt, and Shavkat is the next in line. We’ll have an announcement soon,” White said.

With Rakhmonov’s finishing ability and Muhammad’s relentless pressure, fight aficionados are eager to witness what promises to be one of the most compelling title matchups of 2025.
