Blues Jets Stanley Cup Playoffs Game 7

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Blues defeated the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 in Game 6 on Friday night, forcing a decisive Game 7 in their Stanley Cup Playoff first-round series. The victory came after the Blues exploded for four goals in the second period, marking a significant turnaround from their previous two losses in the series.

With the series tied 2-2, the Blues took the lead in Game 6 during a crucial burst of scoring. Nathan Walker opened the scoring for St. Louis, followed by goals from captain Brayden Schenn, Cam Fowler, and Alexey Toropchenko within just over five minutes. This offensive showcase allowed the Blues to take full control of the game.

Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck faced criticism once again, allowing five goals on 23 shots before being pulled from the game following Toropchenko’s goal, his third consecutive game not finishing in St. Louis. This has become a troubling trend in the playoffs for the two-time Vezina Trophy winner, as he has struggled with an .860 save percentage overall in the postseason.

“It’s more our doing than theirs,” said Jets forward Mark Scheifele, reflecting on his team’s unraveling during the game. Despite a strong regular season, finishing with a 56-22-4 record and winning the Presidents’ Trophy, the Jets have not been able to convert that success into playoff victories.

In stark contrast to their struggles on the road, Hellebuyck has been effective back in Winnipeg, boasting a 3-0 record with a 2.33 goals-against average in home games during this series. However, Hellebuyck’s playoff woes have led to mounting pressure on the Jets ahead of the critical Game 7.

“This is the best-of-three series now, and we’ve got home ice advantage,” Scheifele stated, emphasizing the potential for redemption as the series heads back to Canada Life Centre for the final matchup.

Blues’ coach Jim Montgomery emphasized the importance of playing well at home, where they have won 14 consecutive games. Jordan Binnington was instrumental in their success, making 21 saves in Game 6.

As both teams prepare for Game 7 on Sunday at 6 p.m. CT, the stakes could not be higher. The winner will advance to the next round, while the losing team will once again face disappointment in the playoffs.
