Brazilian High Court Votes On Fate Of Soccer Star In Rape Conviction Case

Judges of the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice have commenced voting on the crucial decision regarding the extradition of former soccer star Robinho to Italy following his 2017 rape conviction in the European nation. The 40-year-old, who played for AC Milan at the time of the incident, was sentenced to nine years in Italy for his involvement in a group sexual assault.

Brazil‘s non-extradition policy for nationals has led to Italy seeking Robinho’s imprisonment in Brazil. The 15-judge panel in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, is deliberating on whether Robinho falls under the immigration laws of Brazil established in 2017. Robinho’s lawyer, Jose Eduardo Alckmin, has argued for a retrial in Brazil citing national sovereignty.

The first judge to cast a vote, Francisco Falcao, supported the idea that Robinho should serve his sentence in Brazil, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and preventing potential diplomatic tensions between Brazil and Italy. He noted that the conviction by a Milan court was legitimate and that Robinho had proper legal representation during the trial.

Robinho, a former standout player for Brazil’s national team as well as clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Santos, retains the right to appeal to Brazil’s Supreme Court if the verdict does not align with his preferences. The ongoing legal battle has sparked international attention and debate surrounding extradition laws and the handling of criminal cases involving high-profile individuals.
