Brian Gutiérrez Usmnt Training Camp 2024

MIAMI, Fla. – Brian Gutiérrez, the 21-year-old Chicago Fire FC midfielder, has earned his first call-up to the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino. The Chicago native, who has been a standout in Major League Soccer (MLS), was named to the 24-player roster for the January training camp, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Gutiérrez, who joined the Chicago Fire Academy at a young age, became the 16th Homegrown signing in the club’s history in 2020. Since then, he has appeared in over 100 matches for the Fire, earning recognition as one of MLS’s top young talents. His inclusion in the USMNT camp comes as the team prepares for friendlies against Venezuela and Costa Rica, offering a platform for emerging players to impress ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

“I was really excited, really happy,” Gutiérrez said during a press conference. “It’s been a great camp so far. The intensity of the group and of the coaching staff is always there.”

Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter, a former USMNT coach, emphasized the importance of the opportunity. “This is a chance for Brian to really put his mark on the program,” Berhalter said. “Players come out of January camp and stick to the roster. It’s a pivotal moment.”

Pochettino, who has managed top clubs like Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham Hotspur, has been praised for his ability to connect with young players. Gutiérrez, one of seven first-time call-ups, has already felt the impact of the Argentine coach’s leadership. “He’s really intense with everybody, but at the same time, he’s always there for you,” Gutiérrez said. “He’s making us better every day.”

The USMNT will face Venezuela on Jan. 18 at Chase Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, followed by a match against Costa Rica on Jan. 22 in Orlando. These friendlies provide a glimpse into Pochettino’s vision for the team as they build toward the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico.

Defender Miles Robinson, a veteran with 30 caps, highlighted the competitive atmosphere in camp. “We’re treating every game like a must-win,” Robinson said. “A lot of these guys are hungry to show what they have, including myself.”

For Gutiérrez, the call-up is not just a personal achievement but a chance to represent his hometown and dual heritage. As a bilingual player, he bridges cultural divides within the team, fostering camaraderie under Pochettino’s guidance. “It’s about seizing your opportunity,” Gutiérrez said. “When you’re at camp, showing your best ability is the most important thing.”
