Polly The Musical Broadway Announcement

New York, NY — Producer Brian Anthony Moreland announced the development of “Polly: The Musical,” a stage adaptation based on the 1989 Disney television movie. The musical will feature a book co-written by Emmy Award winners Lena Waithe and Michael Benjamin Washington.

The adaptation draws from the teleplay by William Blinn and Eleanor H. Porter’s classic novel, “Pollyanna.” It will feature music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner Siedah Garrett and Joriah Kwamé. Direction and choreography will be led by two-time Tony nominee Debbie Allen, who also directed the original film.

Set in Alabama during the 1950s, the story follows Polly, a spirited orphan navigating a segregated small town filled with negativity. The 1989 film starred Keshia Knight-Pulliam and featured the final performance of Butterfly McQueen. It was followed by a sequel, “Polly: Comin’ Home” in 1990.

In a statement, Allen emphasized the relevance of Polly’s message today, saying, “The power of a single positive voice can make change in the face of adversity and divisiveness. This musical, with its joy and its unbridled hope, will shine a light on a path for every audience to find unity in their community.” The production aims to resonate with audiences and inspire a sense of hope.
