INDIANAPOLIS — Tez Johnson is making waves in the sports world as he prepares for the NFL after an impressive college football career at Oregon. The wide receiver, who set the Oregon single-season record with 86 receptions in 2023, looks to his brother, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, for guidance as he transitions to professional play.

Johnson, an Alabama native, ended his college career with 1,182 receiving yards—ranking third in Oregon’s history—and 10 touchdowns, which tied for fourth all-time. He understands the magnitude of this next step, especially with his brother’s recent experience in mind. “He told me to just be myself,” Johnson said. “Staying true to who I am and showing them, I belong.”

Both brothers have experienced significant success in their football endeavors, with Bo Nix excelling at Auburn before joining the Broncos, while Tez has shaped his talent at Oregon after transferring from Troy. Their journey through ups and downs, guided by their father, Patrick Nix, has instilled a strong focus in Tez. Patrick Nix, currently the head coach at Central-Phenix City High School, previously coached both his sons at Pinson Valley High School.

During Johnson’s junior season, Pinson Valley captured the Class 6A state championship, further fueling his drive. Reflecting on his talented teammates, he noted, “I played with a lot of guys that were really good on that team. [Ga’Quincy “Kool-Aid” McKinstry] was probably one of the toughest matchups I ever played against.” He added that their competitiveness during practice often required some intervention from their father, showing the intensity of their training.

As both brothers look ahead, Johnson is equipped with wisdom from his family’s legacy. Before arriving in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, he shared the last piece of advice from Patrick Nix: “Know that you belong. Nobody here is better than you.”

Alongside his personal journey, Johnson confirmed that one of his formal interviews during the combine was with the Denver Broncos. This could signal a potential reunion in the NFL, uniting him with his brother in the ‘Mile High’ city.

As the combine continues, other players are also making headlines. For instance, Tennessee’s James Pearce Jr. clocked a 4.47-second 40-yard dash, the fastest among edge rushers. Close contenders included Syracuse’s Fadil Diggs and Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart, who posted times of 4.57 and 4.59 seconds, respectively.

While Johnson navigates the combine, he knows the combination of personal history, hard work, and family support will be crucial as he aims for a successful career in professional football.
