Miami Dade County Brush Fire Florida

Miami-Dade County, FL – A brush fire in southern Miami-Dade has scorched 3,600 acres and is only 20% contained as of Tuesday. The blaze threatens critical roads connecting the Florida Keys to the mainland, prompting significant traffic disruptions.

Firefighters from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were dispatched at approximately 1:17 p.m. Tuesday to tackle the fire near Card Sound Road and the 40800 block. In a bid to facilitate firefighting efforts, authorities closed Card Sound Road completely and briefly halted traffic on US 1.

As a result of the closure, travelers faced extended delays, prompting Monroe County officials to urge drivers to avoid the affected area. After approximately eight hours, US 1 was reopened, but Card Sound Road remained closed early Wednesday morning.

According to the Florida Forest Service, the fire’s growth is anticipated to continue for several days due to dry conditions and stable weather patterns conducive to wildfires. Fortunately, no injuries or structural damages have been reported thus far.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is collaborating closely with the Florida Forest Service to extinguish the fire, but heavy firefighting equipment has faced challenges in navigating the swampy terrain. Local authorities are advising residents with respiratory issues to limit outdoor exposure, keep vehicle windows closed, and use air conditioning to filter indoor air.

Travelers caught in the backup expressed frustration, with many opting to wait out the delays in nearby hotels. As of now, while wildfires in March aren’t uncommon, the peak fire season in South Florida typically occurs from April through June.
