Cam Newton Critiques ESPN Drama; Patriots Face Injury Setbacks
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Cam Newton, a two-time Super Bowl champion, dismissed recent controversies tied to Drake Maye and the New England Patriots during his WEEI interview last week. Newton referred to the Patriots as ‘fool’s gold’ and expressed frustration over the attention given to Maye’s lack of awareness about his criticism.
When questioned about Newton’s comments, Maye reportedly shrugged off the criticism, stating he hadn’t heard it and was unaware of the show Newton was on. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith responded strongly, accusing Maye of being dishonest, emphasizing that ‘First Take’ is the top morning sports show. Chris Hogan, a former Patriots receiver, criticized this narrative, questioning why there is an attempt to undermine a young player like Maye. “At what point did it become just the norm to try to tear down a 23-year-old kid who is now in his second year in the league?” he asked.
Hogan defended Maye, highlighting his recent successes with a 10-2 record, and pointed out that the young quarterback is focused on preparing for games rather than engaging with media drama. “Maybe you focused on some of this stuff here and there, but you were one of the best players in the league. You didn’t care about any of that nonsense,” Hogan added, addressing Newton directly.
In related news, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel announced that rookie first-round pick Campbell will be placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury sustained in the team’s recent 26-20 win against the Cincinnati Bengals. Campbell will miss at least four games, including crucial matchups against the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens. His expected return date is the season finale against the Miami Dolphins.
With Campbell sidelined, Vederian Lowe will step in as the starter at left tackle. Lowe has experience starting 13 games last season but played through a torn labrum injury. He acknowledged the importance of his opportunity, stating, “The opportunity means everything.” Lowe previously had a solid performance, allowing no sacks in five appearances before the injury affected his play.
As the Patriots prepare for Monday night’s game against the New York Giants, Lowe is determined to support his team and prove his capabilities. “Will’s a great player. I’m just going to do my job until he heals up and gets back,” Lowe mentioned, referencing Campbell.
