Canada's Rachel Homan Clinches Gold At World Women's Curling Championship In Thrilling Final Match

Canada’s Rachel Homan secured a triumphant victory at the World Women’s Curling Championship, edging out Switzerland‘s Silvana Tirinzoni 7-5 in a sensational final in Sydney, N.S.

Homan showcased her skill with a clutch split for three points in the ninth end, leaving the Swiss team no chance for a game-tying deuce in the 10th end.

The win marked the end of Canada’s six-year title drought at this prestigious event and added another milestone to Homan’s career since her 2017 world title in Beijing.

The last Canadian to clinch gold at the world championship was Jennifer Jones, who triumphed in 2018 in North Bay, Ont.

Homan, alongside teammates Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes, continued their winning streak from the national championship to claim victory at the world stage.

After a stellar 11-1 performance in round-robin play at Centre 200, Canada met South Korea‘s Eunji Gim in the semifinals on their path to the final match against Tirinzoni.

The fiercely competitive game saw Homan outshine her opponent, who had secured four consecutive world titles prior to this event.

Canada’s top-seeded team, led by Homan, started the final match with the hammer but faced staunch resistance from the Swiss, forcing Homan to settle for a single point in the opening end.

Despite some minor errors early on, the Canadian team managed to maintain composure and turn the tide in their favor with strategic plays throughout the match.

Homan’s exceptional performance in the critical ninth end, where she executed two crucial shots flawlessly, ultimately led to her team’s victory, much to the delight of the spirited crowd of 4,373 in attendance.

The win improved Homan’s impressive season record to 62-6, underscoring her dominance in the sport and enhancing her legacy as a world-class curler.

Following the final match, bronze was secured by South Korea’s Eunji Gim, who defeated Italy’s Stefania Constantini 6-3 in a hard-fought battle.

As the competition wrapped up with an overall attendance of 45,602 over nine days, Uijeongbu, South Korea was announced as the host city for next year’s world women’s championship.

The world men’s curling championship is set to commence in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, with Brad Gushue from St. John's, N.L., leading the Canadian team in pursuit of further curling glory.

Reported by The Canadian Press, this monumental win for Rachel Homan underscores Canada’s re-emergence on the global curling stage, positioning them as a force to be reckoned with in the sport.
