Capitals Honor Ovechkin for 900 Goals and 1,500 Games
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Capitals celebrated captain Alex Ovechkin‘s incredible achievements before their game against the Winnipeg Jets on November 26. Ovechkin, a 21-year NHL veteran and the league’s all-time leading goal scorer, became the first player to net 900 career goals and reach the milestone of playing 1,500 games with the same franchise.
Prior to the game, a special ceremony was held at Capital One Arena, attended by Ovechkin’s family, teammates, and fans. Ovechkin’s massive achievement was highlighted by his historic 900th goal scored against the St. Louis Blues on November 5, 2025, twenty years after his first NHL goal.
“It’s a special moment to be the first guy to score 900 goals,” Ovechkin said. “Celebrating with my family and teammates makes it even more meaningful.”
Ovechkin’s career has been marked by numerous milestones. He holds the record for the most goals in NHL history, as well as power-play goals, game-winning goals, and many other categories. His recent performances continue to garner attention and applause, including a hat trick in Montreal, which solidified his position in the league’s top ten scorers.
Capitals coach Spencer Carbery expressed his gratitude, reflecting on his time working with Ovechkin. “I’ve had a front row seat to witness greatness firsthand. It’s hard to wrap your head around what he has achieved,” Carbery stated.
The Capitals honored Ovechkin not only for his on-ice accomplishments but also for his contributions off the ice, particularly in growing youth hockey interest in the D.C. area. Ovechkin’s charitable work and programs have inspired a generation of young players and helped establish a vibrant local hockey community.
With 907 career goals and counting, Ovechkin’s legacy continues to grow. The Capitals look forward to more milestones as they enjoy this Thanksgiving Eve celebration of their captain, the Great Eight.
