Carlos Alcaraz Advances to Italian Open Final with Strong Semifinal Win

ROME (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz advanced to his first Italian Open final on Friday, defeating Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6 (4) at the Foro Italico. This marks Alcaraz’s third final in three clay-court events this season, adding to his recent victory at the Monte Carlo Masters and his runner-up finish at the Barcelona Open.
Alcaraz, the third-ranked player, is preparing to defend his title at the French Open, which starts on May 25. He withdrew from the Madrid Open last month due to injuries affecting his legs. Nevertheless, he returned to form in Rome, showcasing resilience and strong gameplay.
“Everybody saw the game against Casper,” Alcaraz said, referring to Jannik Sinner’s impressive performance against Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals. “It’s a huge level. If I’m going to play against Tommy Paul, I have to be ready for that, and if I’m playing against Jannik, I have to be ready for that battle.”
In the final, Alcaraz will face either top-ranked Sinner or No. 12 seed Tommy Paul. He emphasized the importance of mental strength during matches. “It wasn’t about playing brilliant,” said Alcaraz. “I think I did it pretty well. I stayed strong mentally when things didn’t go my way.”
In the women’s final, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini will compete against an opponent yet to be determined. Additionally, Paolini and her partner have advanced to the women’s doubles final after defeating a Russian pair in a rematch of last year’s Olympic finals.
Despite previously withdrawing from competition, Alcaraz appeared healthy in his semifinal match, wearing a long brace on his right leg. His performance has raised expectations as he nears the prestigious French Open.
