Carmel Takes Down Harrison in State Soccer Championship
INDIANAPOLIS — The Harrison boys soccer team ended its quest for a second consecutive state title with a 3-1 loss to Carmel in a thrilling championship match on Saturday. The game showcased the top two teams in the state, with Carmel delivering a strong performance for the second time this season against Harrison.
Carmel, now with a record of 17-1-3, struck first in the 13th minute when Curtis Droste scored off a corner kick, combining a header with a back-heel kick. Harrison senior forward Connor Lange, returning from an ankle injury, equalized just nine minutes later, bringing the score to 1-1. “Connor just brings another element to our attack. He was critical in postseason play, and I was super proud of their season,” said Harrison coach Bryan Clouse.
The game changed dramatically when Carmel was awarded a penalty kick in the 25th minute after a foul by Harrison. Senior defender Alex Rubin converted the kick successfully, giving Carmel a 2-1 lead. Harrison struggled to capitalize on several scoring opportunities, with sophomore goalkeeper Marshall Crowell making crucial saves to keep his team in the game.
The final blow came in the 66th minute when Evan Bardes scored, assisted by Troy Enslind, making it 3-1. Despite Harrison’s efforts, they could not rally back. “They were the better team tonight,” Clouse acknowledged, reflecting on Carmel’s skill and strategy. The loss marked a bittersweet end to Harrison’s impressive season, especially after the team made history by reaching the state championship for the first time.
