Enzo Maresca, the head coach of Chelsea FC, faces a challenging yet promising dilemma as the formidable performances of forwards Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku compel him to reconsider his starting lineup. This unexpected predicament arises amidst their impressive goal-scoring sprees, causing Maresca to deliberate over who should assume the role of central striker for upcoming matches. In spite of the complexity it presents, Maresca embraces the competition within his squad.

Nkunku, who recently scored a hat-trick in Chelsea’s dominant 5-0 League Cup win over Barrow, has been on fire since his remarkable goal off the bench against Bournemouth just ten days earlier. On the other hand, Jackson has been prolific in Premier League play, with two goals against West Ham United over the weekend, bringing his tally to four goals in as many league fixtures. Their standout performances place Maresca in the difficult position of selecting a striker for Saturday’s match against Brighton and Hove Albion.

“Both Nicolas and Christo are doing fantastic, not only because they are scoring but because of how they work off the ball and sacrifice for the team,” Maresca stated, emphasizing the dual importance of offense and defense. “It’s a nice problem when you have two strikers who continue to score. When you can decide which one to start with, it’s nice,” he added, acknowledging the luxury of choice he currently enjoys.

The Italian coach also highlighted his strategic use of full-backs to augment Chelsea’s attacking maneuvers. Against Barrow, Maresca employed full-backs who alternated between contributing to midfield solidity and providing width on the flanks. This strategy, demonstrated by players such as Malo and the returning “Chilly,” seeks to increase passing options and maintain offensive pressure.

Maresca’s intentions for Chelsea’s tactical play are shaped by the attributes of their opponents, aiming to exploit spaces and player overloads at key moments during matches. “We try to prepare the game depending on how the other team is defending or attacking. We try to find solutions,” he elaborated. His flexible approach aims to enhance attacking options while maintaining a balance between offense and defense.

Despite the performance indicators favoring the inclusion of both Jackson and Nkunku, Maresca remains cautious. He cites the necessity to preserve defensive balance, expressing a desire to incorporate all his prolific attackers yet acknowledging the limitations imposed by defensive duties. “I would like to put all of them in because I really like football and I really like to keep the ball. The problem is when you lose the ball and need to defend, and not all of them can defend at the same level,” Maresca explained.
