Chennai Open 2025 Tennis Tournament

CHENNAI, India — The WTA 250 tournament kicks off Monday in Chennai, with several Indian players set to face tough competition. This inaugural event is expected to bring exciting matchups as both local talent and experienced players take center stage.

Among the featured matches, Donna Vekic, ranked No. 79, faces India’s Vaishnavi Adkar, a promising 20-year-old making her Tour debut. Adkar secured a bronze medal at the World University Games and aims to capitalize on Vekic’s lack of recent form. While Vekic has struggled this season, her powerful game could prove too much for the debutant.

“It’s a huge opportunity for me,” Adkar said. “I’ll try to play my best and see what happens.”

Francesca Jones is matched against qualifier Mei Yamaguchi, who won two qualifying matches to reach the main draw. Jones recently secured her first Tour-level title in Palermo and ranks near a career-high at No. 75. Despite Yamaguchi’s strong start, Jones’s experience makes her a strong favorite.

“I feel great coming into the tournament,” said Jones. “I’m excited to play on this surface.”

Other notable matches include Iryna Iatsenko against Anastasia Charaeva, where Iatsenko’s aggressive baseline game will be tested by Charaeva’s defensive style. Additionally, Linda Fruhvirtova, with her solid control, faces Astrid Lew Yan Foon.

The tournament is expected to feature thrilling contests in humid conditions, which will demand both fitness and patience from players. Fans and local supporters are eager to witness the blend of talent and competition throughout the event.
