CICERO, Ill. — A mixed martial arts fighter died after sustaining injuries during a competition on Friday night at Cicero Stadium. Isaac Johnson, 31, of Chicago, competed in the Matador Fighter Challenge when he collapsed near the end of his fight.

According to town officials, the incident occurred at approximately 8:38 p.m. An ambulance was summoned and transported Johnson to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, stated the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities have scheduled an autopsy to determine Johnson’s cause and manner of death, while Cicero police are conducting a death investigation. No further details were available immediately.

Johnson was slated to participate in a heavyweight Thai boxing match, part of the event described as “the ultimate MMA and Thai event, where local warriors will battle it out in high-stakes, high-intensity matches.”

Event promoter Joe Goytia expressed his shock and grief in a Facebook post, stating, “I don’t have the words to express how I feel right now. This is a post I hoped to never make.” He continued, “I can only say my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and teammates.”

As the investigation continues, further updates regarding the incident and Johnson’s autopsy results are expected to be released.
