Chiefs Face Lions in Must-Win Game Amid Offensive Line Woes
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs desperately need a win against the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football after a tough start to the season. The Chiefs, with a record of 2-3, are looking to bounce back following a narrow defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5.
The Chiefs’ situation is compounded by an injury concern for their offensive line. Just hours before kickoff, Kansas City announced that starting left tackle Josh Simmons has been added to the injury report due to a personal issue. He is now listed as questionable for tonight’s game against Detroit.
“Josh Simmons has been added to the injury report. He is questionable for tonight’s game (Not Injury Related – Personal),” the Chiefs posted on social media platform X.
If Simmons cannot play, it would be a significant setback for the Chiefs’ offense. The 2025 first-round draft pick has been instrumental in protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, allowing only seven sacks in the team’s first five games. In contrast, the Lions boast a formidable defensive line, led by star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who has recorded five sacks this season. Detroit’s defense overall has tallied 16 sacks so far.
Additionally, linebacker Al-Quadin Muhammad has emerged as a strong defensive presence, contributing 3.5 sacks and consistently pressuring opposing quarterbacks. In the event that Simmons is unable to take the field, the Chiefs may turn to backups Wanya Morris or Jaylon Moore to fill the left tackle position.
Last season, the Chiefs struggled with left tackle performance, even moving offensive guard Joe Thuney to the position during the playoffs to protect Mahomes’ blindside. Simmons’ contributions had offered optimism for the team this year.
As this critical matchup unfolds, the Chiefs look to address their offensive line concerns while striving for an essential victory in a tight AFC West division.
