NEW ORLEANS — The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a humiliating defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles, losing 40-22 in Super Bowl 2025 on Sunday, dashing hopes for a championship three-peat. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a vocal superfan of the Chiefs, expressed his disappointment, saying the team and quarterback Patrick Mahomes had ’embarrassed themselves on a national scale.’
During a video posted on social media, Portnoy stated, ‘Absolutely demolished by the Eagles. Patrick Mahomes looks like a JV quarterback,’ referencing Mahomes’ tough night in which he was sacked six times, marking the most sacks he has faced in a single game throughout his NFL career.
Portnoy seized the opportunity to underscore his belief that Mahomes and the Chiefs cannot be compared to the New England Patriots‘ dynasty that was led by Tom Brady. ‘Now, it doesn’t take away from the fact they got three titles. It does stop the conversation… people comparing the New England Patriots’ dynasty and the Chiefs’ dynasty, they don’t even belong on the same field,’ he said.
In his critique, Portnoy contrasted Mahomes with Brady, asserting, ‘The Chiefs would never ever beat the Patriots dynasty, not in a million years. Patrick Mahomes is not Tom Brady. Tom Brady has never puked on himself how Patrick Mahomes just did.’ He acknowledged that while Mahomes might dislike Barstool Sports, that was not the issue, insisting, ‘He was awful. Couldn’t rise up, horrible throws. No protection, fine. Brady would have found a way.’
Despite Mahomes finishing the game with 257 passing yards and three touchdowns, his performance included two interceptions and a particularly dismal first half, where he completed just 6-of-14 passes for a career-worst 33 passing yards while the Chiefs trailed 24-0.
The loss was particularly painful considering the historical context; Brady and the Patriots, over three Super Bowl losses, only fell short by a total of 15 points.
Portnoy lamented the missed opportunity for the Chiefs, hoping to be the first team to achieve back-to-back three-peats in the Super Bowl era. Now, Mahomes has a Super Bowl record of 3-2 after two losses by a combined 40 points.
On the other hand, the Eagles celebrated their second Lombardi trophy, with running back Saquon Barkley contributing significantly to the victory. Barkley, who has had a standout season, has rushed for a franchise-record 2,005 yards in the regular season, nearing the NFL record of 2,476 yards held by Terrell Davis.
During the preparation leading up to the game, Eagles players like Parris Campbell reflected on the journey, stating, ‘It’s cool because me and him have become so close over the past two years. Our families are like family and hang out all the time.’
As the NFL community processes the aftermath of the final game of the season, the debate over legacies continues. Mahomes, at just 29, remains focused on his team’s achievements rather than personal accolades, emphasizing the collective goal of winning a championship.
‘You always want to leave a legacy and kind of make your imprint on history,’ Mahomes mentioned. ‘But more than anything, you just want to accomplish a goal that you have with your teammates. When you start in training camp, your goal is to win the Super Bowl.’
