Though Cinco de Mayo is most prominently observed in the United States, its significance in Mexico stems from a past confrontation during the French-Mexican War. The 1862 battle turned the tide by preventing French expansion and later influencing their withdrawal from Mexico.

Mario García, a Chicanx historian, highlights the importance of Cinco de Mayo today and its connections to the Chicano Movement of the 1960s as a day of cultural recognition and celebration.
