Clipper Race Prize Giving Ceremony In Qingdao Honors Victorious Sailors

Following a spectacular welcome ceremony for the Clipper Race teams in Qingdao, the Prizegiving Ceremony for Race 9: Sailing City – Qingdao Cup was held, celebrating the triumphant sailors.

The event commenced with traditional dance performances, setting the stage for Dr. Wang Dongxiang, Deputy Secretary General of Qingdao Municipal People’s Government, and Laura Ayres, Managing Director of Clipper Ventures, to deliver welcoming speeches.

Laura Ayres expressed gratitude for the enduring partnership between Clipper Ventures and Qingdao Organising Committee (QOC), highlighting the impact the collaboration has had on local sailors-turned-ambassadors.

The Prizegiving Ceremony kicked off with an exchange of gifts between Sir Robin Knox-Johnson and QOC officials, followed by accolades for the impressive fundraising efforts of the teams.

Notably, UNICEF raised an outstanding £366,749.99, with top fundraising honors going to Bekezela, UNICEF, and Yacht Club Punta del Este.

The coveted Scoring Gate bonuses were awarded to Zhuhai, Our Isles and Oceans, and UNICEF, recognizing their strategic prowess during the race.

Similarly, the Ocean Sprint bonus points went to Dare To Lead, Perseverance, and Yacht Club Punta del Este for their exceptional speed and performance.

Qingdao claimed the third-place pennant, followed by UNICEF in second place, and Our Isles and Oceans emerged as champions, securing the top spot with maximum points.

Mark Light, Clipper Race Director, concluded the ceremony by thanking all attendees and participants for their commitment to the race.

The evening concluded with captivating cultural dance displays and a delectable spread of local cuisine, embodying the spirit of unity and celebration among sailors and hosts.
