INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The Los Angeles Clippers, a veteran team aiming for their first NBA title, are looking to their G-League affiliate in San Diego for support this season. The San Diego Clippers play at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, and their efforts are crucial for the main team at the Intuit Dome.

“It’s a huge asset,” said LA Clippers head coach Tyron Lue. “I think (SD head coach) Paul Hewitt does a great job of learning and teaching what we’re teaching up here and taking it to our younger guys.” This development creates a smooth transition for players moving between teams.

The San Diego Clippers have welcomed a local player this year. Kobe Sanders, an alumnus of Christian High School, was selected as a second-round draft pick from Nevada. He signed a two-way contract that allows him to play up to 50 games with the NBA team this season.

<p“It's a blessing. I mean, when I got the call, I was amazed,” Sanders said. “I'm right in my own backyard, something I dreamed of since I was little.” He expressed excitement about being closer to home while pursuing his professional career.

While playing with the Clippers, Sanders has the chance to learn from former University of San Diego standout Kawhi Leonard. Last season, Leonard’s return to health transformed the Clippers, leading to an 18-3 finish and playoff advantage. “When Kawhi’s healthy, we’re a totally different team,” Lue remarked.

To ensure Leonard and other veteran players like Chris Paul and James Harden remain healthy, the Clippers have devised a careful management plan. “Make sure they’re taking care of their body and being smart, because James wants to play every single night,” Lue noted.

The excitement extends beyond the team as the NBA prepares to return to NBC after a two-decade absence. Lue reflected on growing up watching the league’s legends on the network, adding, “I think our guys will enjoy it.” The NBA’s return to NBC is slated for October 21, when the Lakers face the Warriors.

The San Diego Clippers kick off their home season on November 14 against the Salt Lake City Stars at Frontwave Arena.
