BEIJING, China — Coco Gauff advanced to the semifinals of the China Open for the third consecutive year after defeating Eva Lys 6-3, 6-4 in a quarterfinal match on Thursday. The No. 2 seed Gauff, who is looking to defend her title, faced a strong challenge from Lys, but managed to control the match with strategic play.

The match lasted 1 hour and 28 minutes, during which Gauff displayed her ability to weather Lys’s aggressive game. The 19-year-old American improved her record in Beijing to 14-1, a remarkable feat since she has reached at least the semifinals every year she has participated since 2021.

“She’s a tough opponent, she hit some incredible shots on the run,” Gauff remarked after the match. “I was trying my best to stay aggressive. Just staying confident in my game and not being too passive when I have the lead.”

The initial set was filled with intense rallies, showcasing both players’ powerful shots. However, Gauff’s quick reflexes allowed her to claw back from early breaks by the German. As the match progressed, Gauff used her well-timed drop shots to take control.

Lys, ranked No. 66, failed to maintain her momentum, finishing with 48 unforced errors. Despite this, she managed to put Gauff under pressure during crucial moments. Nonetheless, Gauff’s steadfastness and superior shot-making led her to a comfortable win.

Coco Gauff’s path continues as she prepares to face either Amanda Anisimova or Jasmine Paolini in the semifinals, marking her fourth semifinal appearance of the year. Her goal now is to successfully defend her title here in Beijing for the second time.
