Connor Bedard Chicago Blackhawks Preseason

CHICAGO, IL — Blackhawks announcer Rick Ball praised rookie Connor Bedard‘s improved speed during a recent preseason game. As the second period started, Ball noted Bedard looked noticeably quicker this year.

Just moments later, Bedard demonstrated this newfound speed on the ice. After Blackhawks player André Burakovsky advanced the puck up the center, Bedard exploded past two Minnesota Wild defenders, setting up a scoring chance. “Right on cue,” Ball exclaimed, as Bedard drove toward the net for a mini-breakaway.

Bedard has worked hard in the offseason to enhance his skating, aiming to improve on his statistics from last season when he recorded 23 goals and 44 assists. After assessing his performance, he felt his speed needed improvement. Statistics showed that during his rookie season, he skated faster than in Year 2, prompting his focus on speed and explosiveness.

“The biggest thing is speed and explosiveness,” Bedard said earlier this year. “I’ve just been trying to learn about my body and how to maintain consistency.”

Blackhawks forward Ryan Donato has noticed Bedard’s progress, observing that he seems to have gained speed over the summer. “He looks a lot faster already,” Donato said. “He’s a true pro and I think he put in a lot of work.”

Head coach Jeff Blashill confirmed that Bedard appears quicker and more agile, which allows him to position himself better during games. “He’s been quick, agile, and on pucks,” Blashill noted. “All those things lead to him getting spots quicker.”

Bedard chose not to participate in the World Championship to focus on his training. Details about his specific workout routine remain private; however, he confirmed that he engaged in various exercises aimed at improving performance.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kent Johnson, who trained alongside Bedard, echoed this commitment to fitness throughout the summer. They shared a training regimen, pushing each other to improve speed and strength.

As a player turning 20, Bedard has shown increased determination on the ice. His recent performance during four preseason games indicates a shift in his approach, as he has actively driven play rather than remaining passive.

Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno remarked on the noticeable change in Bedard’s mindset. “He’s on a mission,” Foligno said. “I’m pumped for him.”

While Bedard is optimistic about his improvements, he emphasizes the need for consistency throughout the season. “I think last year I was pretty dynamic when I was on, but I had pretty big gaps,” Bedard said. “Finding that consistency is key for me.”

For now, Bedard feels satisfied with his performance as the regular season approaches, but his consistency during the upcoming games remains to be seen.
