MIAMI — Florida Gators cornerback Cormani McClain earned his first start of the season during a game against No. 4 Miami after a strong performance at LSU. This game marks a significant shift for McClain, who has faced challenges in his career thus far.

The Gators are dealing with multiple injuries, including the absence of redshirt senior EDGE George Gumbs. Gumbs missed practice this week and was ruled out for the rivalry matchup at Hard Rock Stadium. Although he traveled with the team, he did not participate in warmups.

In Gumbs’ absence, true freshman EDGE Jaden Robinson is expected to make his first career start at JACK outside linebacker. Florida is also missing several key defensive players, which adds to the pressure on the team as they prepare for the Hurricanes.

Florida’s injury report includes nine players not participating in the upcoming game. Some players missing have been sidelined for weeks due to various injuries. However, safety Trey Dean has returned, having missed the last two games.

Cormani McClain’s journey with the Gators has been rocky. Last season, he could manage only two games with minimal impact before being labeled a “locker room cancer” due to late arrivals at practices. This year, under Coach Billy Napier, he appears to be improving both on and off the field.

Napier praised McClain’s development, noting that he has shown a better attitude and greater commitment to his team. ‘Cormani had some discipline issues when he first got here, and those have faded away,’ Napier said. ‘He’s talking a lot more, communicating better, and presenting himself well.’ McClain’s performance against LSU included two key stops, demonstrating his growth and capability.

As McClain continues to evolve as a player, teammates have noticed his dedication and focus. Safety Jordan Castell noted, ‘He is more focused. A guy who shows up to practice, works hard, shows up early now. He’s locked in.’

The Gators hope to harness McClain’s improved play and chemistry on defense as they face a strong Miami team this weekend.
