Coronation Street Star Julie Goodyear’s Husband Speaks Out on Her Dementia Diagnosis
The husband of beloved Coronation Street actress, Julie Goodyear, has opened up about her battle with dementia, expressing the pain of watching her gradual decline. Scott Brand, who is married to the iconic actress known for her role as Bet Lynch on the long-running soap opera, shared his heartbreak over Goodyear’s deteriorating health.
Brand’s poignant words come in support of a new campaign by the Alzheimer's Society, which aims to shed light on the harsh realities of living with dementia. The campaign, featuring a TV advert narrated by actor Colin Firth, is titled The Long Goodbye, highlighting the devastating effects of the disease that strip away a person’s identity repeatedly.
Julie Goodyear, 81, captured the hearts of audiences during her time on Coronation Street from 1966 to 2003, portraying the feisty and fashionable Bet Lynch. Her husband, Scott Brand, revealed that Goodyear now struggles to recognize people and has lost touch with her once vibrant and glamorous persona.
Brand lamented the loss of his “fun-loving wife,” describing the painful ordeal of witnessing her gradual decline. He shared how Goodyear’s interest in her appearance, including her signature leopard print outfits, has waned as the disease has progressed, leaving a noticeable void in their lives.
As a devoted husband, Brand made the difficult decision to become Goodyear’s full-time carer, giving up his work to attend to her needs. Acknowledging the challenges of caregiving, he emphasized the importance of seeking help and support early on in the journey of living with dementia.
Alzheimer’s Society, an organization providing vital resources for those affected by dementia, has been a lifeline for Brand and Goodyear. The CEO, Kate Lee, expressed the somber reality of the “long goodbye” experienced by individuals and families impacted by dementia, emphasizing the need for continued support and care.
The enduring legacy of Julie Goodyear as Bet Lynch on Coronation Street has left an indelible mark on television history. Despite her current health struggles, her contribution to the entertainment industry and the enduring love of fans stand as a testament to her talent and impact.
