Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended Ahead of 2026 World Cup
Lisbon, Portugal – Cristiano Ronaldo, the star player for the Portuguese national football team, received a one-match suspension from FIFA‘s Disciplinary Committee. He has already served this suspension during the World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Armenia.
The punishment also includes two additional matches, contingent upon his future conduct. If Ronaldo maintains good behavior, he will be eligible to play in Portugal’s first match of the World Cup.
The incident that led to the suspension occurred on November 13, when Ronaldo was sent off in a match against Ireland in Dublin. This marked the first time in his 226 appearances for the national team that he received a direct red card.
Referee Glenn Nyberg initially issued a yellow card for a foul on Irish defender Dara O'Shea, but after reviewing the play with VAR, he upgraded the penalty to a red card.
In anticipation of the World Cup, Mexico is considering an international friendly against Portugal. This match would serve as the reopening of Estadio Banorte, previously known as Estadio Azteca. The presence of Ronaldo is expected to attract significant attention.
However, the match details have not been officially announced as both Mexican and European teams wait for the World Cup draw, scheduled for December 5 in the United States.
If Ronaldo avoids further disciplinary issues, he is expected to participate in the friendly match, which will take place in a stadium that is set to host its third World Cup.
Meanwhile, Mexico aims to improve its form after concluding 2025 with disappointing results against nations like Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The country will co-host the World Cup with the United States and Canada, featuring 48 teams.
