Crystal Palace U18s Forward Jesse Derry Wins Goal of the Month
Crystal Palace Under-18s forward Jesse Derry expressed his joy after scoring a stunning scissor-kick goal against Brighton & Hove Albion, a strike that claimed the February Goal of the Month title in an online fan vote. Derry’s acrobatic goal, set up by a remarkable run from right-back Tyler Whyte covering over half the pitch, captured the hearts of the fans despite ending in a defeat.
Receiving the award, Derry shared his excitement, stating, “It’s a great feeling to know that the fans have voted for your goal, especially with other strong contenders in the mix. It’s a wonderful achievement to add another Goal of the Month trophy to my collection.” This marks Derry’s second Goal of the Month win this season, previously triumphing in August 2023 for a solo effort against Reading.
Discussing the goal, Whyte, who provided the assist, mentioned, “My initial plan was to pass down the line to Laolu Omobolaji, but with no run made, I decided to take on the Brighton defender one-on-one. After beating him, I saw Jesse at the back post and passed perfectly to him for the amazing finish.”
Reflecting on their season as first-year scholars with Crystal Palace’s U18s, Whyte commented on the ups and downs, aiming to secure his spot in the team after overcoming injuries. Derry also spoke on their successful season, focusing on contributing to the team with goals and assists while striving for improved performances.
Derry emphasized the importance of ending their losing streak, emphasizing the team’s collective effort to push for better results and performances in their upcoming games. Both players highlighted the need for unity and determination to turn the tide and finish the season on a high note.
