CSK Dominates MI in IPL 2025 Opener at Chepauk Stadium

CHENNAI, India — The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opened IPL 2025 with a commanding performance against their arch-rivals, the Mumbai Indians (MI), at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on March 23, 2025.
In a match billed as IPL’s El Clasico, CSK utilized their strong spin attack to secure a decisive victory. The home side opted to bowl first after winning the toss, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad expressing the need to adapt to the pitch conditions, which were expected to aid spinners.
CSK’s bowlers, led by Noor Ahmad, quickly dismantled MI’s batting order, with Ahmad claiming three wickets, including that of MI captain Suryakumar Yadav, who fell for 29 runs. The Mumbai side struggled throughout their innings, ultimately posting a disappointing total of 160 runs.
“It was crucial to capitalize on the pitch that suited our bowling attack,” Gaikwad said. “The bowlers executed the plan perfectly, and we kept the pressure on them.”
Khaleel Ahmed also made a significant impact, taking two early wickets, including the prized scalp of Rohit Sharma for a duck, marking his 18th IPL duck, which tied him for the most in tournament history.
“We need to focus on better starts in the coming matches,” Rohit remarked after the game. “It’s disappointing to lose our opening match again.”
As the innings progressed, MI’s batting faltered under intense pressure. Noor Ahmad’s tight overs, complemented by Ravichandran Ashwin’s return to CSK, further crippled MI’s efforts. Ashwin claimed a wicket in his first over back with the team, adding excitement to the crowd.
“It feels great to be back playing for CSK after so long,” Ashwin said. “The crowd, the atmosphere, it’s all so special, and I’m glad we could start the tournament with a win.”
After MI’s innings, CSK took to the pitch for their chase, looking to build on their early momentum. Notably, MS Dhoni was a focal point for fans, taking the wicketkeeping gloves for a record eighteenth season.
Fans in attendance witnessed Dhoni’s swift reflexes behind the stumps as he executed a lightning-fast stumping to remove Suryakumar, much to the delight of the CSK faithful, which showcased his enduring prowess.
“Every time he steps on the field, it’s magic,” commented a longtime CSK supporter. “Dhoni is a legend, and watching him play is still a thrill.”
The match featured several changes in rules, including the lifting of the saliva ban for bowlers, which was a point of discussion prior to the game, allowing bowlers more flexibility.
As the match unfolded, Chennai’s batting lineup aimed to maintain the momentum, with significant contributions expected from their seasoned players. The victory against MI not only marks a successful start to IPL 2025 for CSK but also sets the tone for the rest of the tournament, igniting hopes for a championship run.
CSK’s next fixtures will be closely watched, especially with the anticipation of MS Dhoni’s performance throughout the season amidst speculation regarding his future in the sport.
