Cubs Struggle Offensively in 6-2 Loss to Mets, Ending Tough 41-Game Stretch

QUEENS, New York — The Chicago Cubs wrapped up a challenging 41-game stretch with a disappointing 6-2 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday, May 11, 2025. During this grueling period, the Cubs held first place for much of the season but faltered, losing four of their last six games.
The Cubs (23-18) faced a tough schedule to start the season but remained competitive until the offense struggled against the Mets (26-15) this weekend. In the three-game series, Chicago scored only 10 runs, with six coming during their 6-5 victory on Saturday.
The Cubs are known for their streaky offense, which has shown signs of reverting to old patterns. When the team hits well, everyone contributes; when they slump, no one gets on base. The Mets utilized their top-tier pitching staff to limit the Cubs’ scoring potential.
Matthew Boyd was one bright spot for the Cubs, delivering a solid performance despite the loss. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits without any walks and striking out eight batters, showcasing his status as one of the Cubs’ most reliable starters this season.
Griffin Canning of the Mets matched Boyd’s performance, allowing just one run over six innings. Canning’s strong pitching included striking out the side in the first inning, setting the tone for the game.
The Mets scored first in the third inning when Luis Torrens hit an RBI triple to bring Starlin Marte home. The Cubs finally broke through in the sixth with a homer from Pete Crow-Armstrong, leveling the score at 1-1.
However, Boyd gave up a home run to Mark Vientos later in the sixth, putting the Mets back on top 2-1. Chicago could not capitalize on offensive opportunities, failing to score when they had runners in scoring position.
In the eighth inning, the Mets exploded for four runs. After a leadoff homer by Francisco Lindor off Cubs pitcher Hodge, Pete Alonso doubled and eventually scored, extending the lead to 6-2. Edwin Diaz closed out the game for New York, securing the victory.
The Cubs will now shift their focus to upcoming games against the Miami Marlins and the Chicago White Sox. They hope to regain their footing during this portion of their schedule.
