Cynthia Erivo to Star in Jesus Christ Superstar at Hollywood Bowl This Summer

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18, 2025 — Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo will lead a star-studded cast in a concert staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice‘s “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Hollywood Bowl this summer. Performances are scheduled for August 1-3, marking a return of the musical to its rock roots.
Directed and choreographed by fellow Tony winner Sergio Trujillo, the production will feature musical direction by Stephen Oremus, also a Tony winner. Additional members of the cast will be announced at a later date, as anticipation builds for the show’s revival.
Erivo, who earned a Tony for her role in “The Color Purple,” is currently nominated for an Academy Award for her lead performance in the film adaptation of “Wicked.” Previously, she portrayed Mary Magdalene in the all-female concept album “Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen,” which reimagined the classic musical.
“Just a little busy this summer,” Erivo shared on Instagram about her new role. “Can’t wait.” In addition to Erivo, the production boasts an all-star creative team, promising an engaging and dynamic interpretation of the celebrated score.
First released as a rock concept album in 1970, “Jesus Christ Superstar” explores the events leading to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ through the perspective of Judas Iscariot. The musical has become a landmark in theater, having premiered on Broadway in 1971 and receiving five Tony Award nominations.
The Hollywood Bowl has previously presented several beloved musicals, including “Kinky Boots,” “A Chorus Line,” and “Les Misérables.” This summer’s lineup includes additional performances by John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, and Hugh Jackman, among others.
With its rich history and cultural significance, the Hollywood Bowl’s upcoming season promises to be a vibrant celebration of music and theater, with “Jesus Christ Superstar” set to be a highlight.
