FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are grappling with a string of injuries that have impacted their defensive lineup significantly. Their latest challenge comes from a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers where they managed a narrow three-point victory. However, the celebration was dampened by a critical injury to rookie defensive end, Marshawn Kneeland.

Kneeland, selected in the second round of the draft, suffered a non-contact knee injury early in the first quarter. Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Kneeland will undergo an arthroscopic procedure, explaining, “We don’t have a total timeline, but he’s scheduled for a procedure [on Tuesday], is the initial plan. We’ll see how that goes.” While the procedure is a setback, it is somewhat relieving to the team as it does not rule Kneeland out for the entire season.

The Cowboys are already managing without star players Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, who were injured in a Week 4 victory over the New York Giants. Parsons is currently listed as “iffy” to return against the Detroit Lions in the upcoming game. Lawrence has been placed on injured reserve due to a Lisfranc injury to his foot.

With these injuries complicating the lineup, the Cowboys are considering several options to bolster their defensive end unit. As Kneeland heads to injured reserve, the team has planned to bring Carl Lawson up from the practice squad. Lawson, along with Chauncey Golston and Tyrus Wheat, has been instrumental in patching the holes left by the absent starters. The group showed promise in their performance against the Steelers, noted Mike Zimmer, defensive coordinator, “Obviously, you’re down four good players in basically one spot, and so we try to figure out what these guys can do, how they can fit in, how they can work.”

Other players like Sam Williams, already sidelined with a torn ACL since training camp, add to the defensive woes. With Henry, signed from the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad, being groomed into rotation, the team hopes to adjust quickly to these challenges.

The Cowboys face a daunting schedule with upcoming games against formidable opponents like the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, and Philadelphia Eagles. These games are crucial for the Cowboys to maintain their competitiveness this season. Dallas must decide whether to seek external reinforcements or make strategic adjustments with their current roster.

The ongoing situation has not only tested the depth of the Cowboys’ roster but also their adaptability and resilience as a team. As they prepare for the next fixture, the focus remains on effectively managing their resources amid personnel shortages.
