Damian Lillard Launches Scholarships for Bay Area Students During All-Star Weekend

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Damian Lillard returned to Oakland High School this weekend, reflecting on his humble beginnings while unveiling a new scholarship program aimed at helping local students access higher education.

The standout guard for the Milwaukee Bucks, now an NBA All-Star, shared memories from his time at the school, where he attended from 2004 to 2008. “I was a regular kid,” Lillard recalled, standing near a trophy case in the hallway. “Everybody will look at where I am now but when I think about the moments in the journey, that’s what gives me chills sometimes about how it all happened.”

During his visit, Lillard introduced The Damian Lillard Scholars program, which will provide $25,000 scholarships to students from nine East Bay high schools. The initiative is designed to support students wishing to attend Portland State University, where Lillard began his college basketball career.

“Him providing this opportunity … it means a lot,” said Princess Momoh-Danga, an Oakland High senior who has applied to Portland State. Lillard is contributing the lead gift for the program, which also aims to assist with costs such as food, housing, textbooks, and transportation for scholarship recipients.

“We could not be more proud to offer this scholarship to East Bay students while linking arms with one of Portland’s most exciting and inspiring civic leaders,” said Ann Cudd, president of Portland State. She emphasized Lillard’s deep connection to both his hometown and the university, citing family ties and his impact in Portland.

As part of the initiative, 27 eligible students have already applied to Portland State, with 15 gaining admission. The program symbolizes Lillard’s commitment to ensuring that education remains accessible to students from his neighborhood and beyond.

Reflecting on the importance of this philanthropic effort, Lillard stated, “If I’m going to do it, I want to make a real impact and lift people up.” His journey from a two-star recruit at Oakland High to a prominent NBA player has shaped his outlook on success and community support. “It means everything to be home,” Lillard said, emphasizing the value of returning to familiar roots during the All-Star festivities.

This weekend, Lillard will participate in the NBA All-Star events, including attempting to win his third consecutive three-point contest. Despite his rising success, Lillard remains dedicated to giving back, showing that even those who reach great heights can help pave the way for the next generation.
