Daniel Berger Relies on 13-Year-Old TaylorMade Irons Despite PGA TOUR Hiatus
Daniel Berger, who recently returned to the PGA TOUR after a 19-month injury hiatus, has been sporting a set of TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC 2011 irons. These clubs, released over a decade ago, offer forgiveness similar to cavity-back irons while maintaining the sleek appearance of blade irons. The forged 1025 carbon steel construction and a visible weight in the back cavity allow for precise center of gravity placement, making them the perfect set according to Berger.
Despite relying on his trusty irons, Berger has made some updates to his bag. He’s been using a new Ping G430 LST driver, two TaylorMade Qi10 Tour fairway woods, a set of Titleist Vokey SM10 wedges, and a Scotty Cameron Phantom prototype putter. These new additions keep him up-to-date on his equipment.
In the recent Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, Berger finished a respectable T39 in his first start since his return. His solid performance showcased his ability to compete at the highest level, even after a long break.
Meanwhile, Stanford senior Michael Thorbjornsen currently holds the top spot in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking. Thorbjornsen’s outstanding play, including a T11 finish in the DP World Tour’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic, has solidified his lead over Christo Lamprecht from Georgia Tech. Lamprecht, the second-ranked player, made two starts on the DP World Tour and aims to challenge Thorbjornsen at the upcoming Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii.
Florida State senior Frederik Kjettrup, ranked 11th in PGA TOUR University, is also seeking to improve his position. Although he missed the cut at the DP World Tour event in Dubai, Kjettrup will have plenty of opportunities during the Seminoles’ upcoming season.
Another notable achievement was Santiago De la Fuente’s victory at the Latin America Amateur Championship. The University of Houston golfer fired a final round 6-under 64 to secure his place in prestigious tournaments such as the Masters, the U.S. Open, and The Open. This accomplishment has propelled De la Fuente to 44th in PGA TOUR University and 58th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
