David McCormick Wins Pennsylvania Senate Seat, Ousting Democratic Incumbent Bob Casey
Republican candidate David McCormick has secured a significant victory in the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate election, defeating three-term Democratic incumbent Senator Bob Casey. This win marks a crucial shift in the Senate, as Republicans have expanded their majority to 53 seats, with two races still pending.
Mccormick, a former CEO of the world’s largest hedge fund and a veteran of the Gulf War, ran a campaign that highlighted his diverse background, including his service at the highest levels of former President George W. Bush‘s administration and his education at West Point and Princeton University. Despite losing the 2022 GOP primary to Dr. Mehmet Oz, McCormick returned to the political arena with a clear primary and the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
The campaign was marked by sharp exchanges between the candidates. McCormick criticized Casey as a weak and career politician, while Casey labeled McCormick as a disconnected outsider due to his residence in Connecticut. McCormick also faced accusations of being a wealthy carpetbagger, but he emphasized his seventh-generation roots in Pennsylvania and his connections to the state.
The election results were closely contested, with McCormick leading by less than 31,000 votes as of Thursday morning, a margin that qualifies the race for an automatic recount. Both candidates expressed optimism about their chances as outstanding votes continued to be counted.
Mccormick’s victory is significant for Pennsylvania’s Democratic establishment, as it ends Casey’s long tenure in the Senate. Casey, the son of a former two-term governor, had won six statewide general elections prior to this loss).
