Jack Hughes Hockey Performance Ranking

Newark, NJ — A debate erupted in the hockey community when content producer Pasha Eshghi ranked New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes above Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, though not above Edmonton OilersConnor McDavid.

Eshghi made the claim during a recent episode of the podcast Spittin’ Chiclets, stating that he was focusing on current performance rather than historical legacy. He acknowledged that both players are considered among the best in hockey and emphasized the importance of their performances this season.

“I didn’t say he is a better player overall,” Eshghi said. “But today, if they play tonight, who are you picking?” This clarification has drawn mixed reactions from fans, with some supporting Hughes’ ranking while others remain loyal to Crosby.

Jack Hughes, 24, has made a strong start this season, collecting 10 points, including six goals and four assists. His recent performance includes a hat trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hughes has been pivotal in the Devils’ 7–1–0 record this season, showcasing his creative playmaking, agility, and scoring ability.

In contrast, 38-year-old Sidney Crosby also boasts an impressive record, with 11 points (six goals and five assists) in the opening eight games of the 2025–26 campaign. Crosby’s leadership continues to guide the Penguins as they seek to maintain an early lead in the Eastern Conference. He recently became the franchise’s all-time leader in combined regular-season and playoff points.

The topic has ignited discussions online about the contrasting styles of the younger generation versus the veteran players in the NHL. Eshghi suggested that Hughes may deserve to be ranked in the 7–10 range among NHL players when fully healthy, reinforcing the idea that current performance is a crucial factor in player evaluations.

As debates continue over player rankings, both Hughes and Crosby are proving they still have a significant impact this season.
